Mahendranagar is a city in the western end of Mahendra highway (Nepal’s longest highway running from east to west). The city is a municipality of Kanchanpur district and the Zonal Headquarters of Mahakali zone. Dhangadhi is nearest city to Mahendranagar which has an airport connected to Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. Mahendranagar shares its southern and western borders with India and has one of the fastest growing population due to the migration from northern hills and Tharus from adjoining areas in the east. Kanchanpur was a malarial forest inhabited by the indigenous Tharu Community some decades ago.

Mahendranagar is a shopping town for people of neighboring district Dadeldhura, Doti and Baitaidi. It has an easy link with Tanakpur Railway junction, about one hour walk to the west. Nearest bordering town of India is Banbasa, from where one can get government bus facility to different cities of India. The nearest are Haridwar, Deheradhun, and Delhi.

Major attractions of Mahendranagar

If you are enjoying a holiday in Mahendranagar, then you are suggested to visit Dodhara Chandani Belly Bridge, Rani Tal, Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, Betkot picnic spot and Belauri: the old administrative headquarters.

Sukla Phanta wildlife reserve is a protected habitat of endangered animals such as Hispid Hare, the pygmy hog, Barasinga (swamp deer). Most of the reserve is grassland fringed almost by Sal forest.

Rani Tal (Rani Lake) is a must visit in Mahendranagar, Kanchanpur. It lies in the Sulklaphanta Wildlife Reserve and attracts thirsty birds and animals. You can watch different kinds of birds here like herons, ducks, kingfisher. Some birds even migrate from Siberia in the winter. You can see hundreds of Swamp deer grazing at the bank of the Lake.

Major rivers are Mahakali, Syauli, Chaughar, Wahamani, Chandar.

Dhami Pratha: Dhami pratha is a common belief here. Dhami is a person who is believed to be connected to the God. Dhami is basically a Tantrik. Whatever he dictates will be accepted as order from the God as people here are superistitious and have blind faith on Dhami. Their role is prominent specially during illness where people sought Dhaami instead of Doctor.

Access

Daily bus service direct to Mahendranagar is available from major cities of Nepal like Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan. It’s almost 20 hours journey from Kathmandu. If you love air travel, then you can go to Dhangadhi city through air from Kathmandu and then take a bus from Dhangadi to Mahendranagar.

The climate is warm here. Hottest days are around 30 degree Celsius and the coldest nights are about 17 degree Celsius and the rainfall is 1422 ml.
